How to care for salad bowls and wooden utensils
Keep salad bowls, spoons and turned woodware nourished and water-resistant — without darkening light-coloured woods.
Salad bowls, wooden spoons, spatulas and turned woodware take a beating — they get wet, wiped and air-dried over and over. Without care they go grey, rough and dry. The trick with light-coloured woodware is to nourish and protect it without darkening the timber.
Why a finish, not just any oil
Our Salad Bowl Finish is a soft balm of food-grade white mineral oil with pale, refined white beeswax (~20%). The oil rehydrates; the white beeswax seals — and because the wax is refined and pale, it protects without yellowing or darkening light woods the way some oils and waxes do.
How to apply
- Make sure the bowl or utensil is clean and completely dry.
- Apply a thin, even layer with a clean lint-free cloth.
- Let it penetrate for 20–30 minutes (overnight for new or very dry pieces).
- Buff off the excess to a soft sheen.
Keeping woodware healthy
- Hand-wash only — never put wooden bowls or spoons in the dishwasher.
- Dry immediately after washing; do not leave soaking.
- Re-apply Salad Bowl Finish whenever the wood looks dry or thirsty.
Food-safe once buffed off. Need to rehydrate a very dry bowl first? A coat of Cutting Board Oil before the finish gives it a deeper drink.
