Cutting board oil vs wax: which one do you need?

Oil, wax or both? How food-grade mineral oil, beeswax and jojoba each protect wood — and when to reach for which.

Oil or wax? It is the most common question in wood care, and the honest answer is: they do different jobs, and most boards benefit from both. Here is how each one works.

Cutting Board Oil — the deep drink

Our Cutting Board Oil is 100% food-grade white mineral oil. It is a thin, free-flowing liquid that penetrates deep into the timber to replace lost moisture. Because it is inert and does not go rancid (unlike cooking oils such as olive or sunflower), it keeps wood supple from the inside out. Reach for oil for regular maintenance, and especially for new or very dry boards that need rehydrating.

Cutting Board Wax — the protective seal

Our Cutting Board Wax blends food-grade mineral oil with beeswax (~28%). The oil still conditions, but the beeswax cures at the surface to form a soft, water-resistant seal. That seal is what helps water bead off and stops staining. Wax sits on top; oil soaks in.

Premium Board Conditioner — the upgrade

For fine end-grain boards, our Premium Board Conditioner adds jojoba to the mineral oil. Jojoba is a plant-derived liquid wax that is shelf-stable and resists rancidity, penetrating evenly for a silky, durable finish.
